What belongs in a useful MT5 journal?
A useful journal connects account records with the decisions and conditions that explain them. Record the account, symbol, timestamps and timezone, product version, configuration reference, trade identifiers, costs and any execution issue. Keep deposits and withdrawals separate from trading outcomes.
For an EA, notes can focus on operational facts rather than inventing a discretionary reason for each entry. Record a parameter change, an interrupted connection or a broker rejection with its timestamp. That makes a later review more informative than adding a generic comment after seeing whether the trade won.
Are you counting deals, positions or grouped trades?
Choose the counting unit before calculating statistics. MT5 distinguishes trades that register a result from total deals, and partial exits can produce multiple records. A journal that counts each partial close separately may produce a different win rate from one that groups the completed position.
Write the grouping rule beside the metric and keep it stable across comparisons. Identify how the journal treats zero-result trades, reversals and positions crossing a reporting boundary. If the underlying export does not support your intended grouping, label that limitation rather than presenting a more precise-sounding statistic.
What does profit factor tell you?
Profit factor compares total profitable results with the magnitude of total losing results. MQL5 defines it as gross profit divided by gross loss; no recorded loss makes the ratio unsuitable for an ordinary finite comparison. State whether your journal's inputs include trading costs.
In a deliberately simplified example, 300 of gains divided by 200 of losses gives 1.5 before any omitted charges. It says nothing about the timing of losses or open exposure. Record the sample size and period, then check whether a few large outcomes dominate the ratio rather than interpreting it as a forecast.
Why is win rate insufficient?
Win rate is the share of the defined sample that ended profitably. Include average gain, average loss and the number of observations beside it. A high percentage of small wins can coexist with an overall loss if losing outcomes are sufficiently large.
For illustration, eight gains of 10 and two losses of 50 produce an 80% win rate but a loss of 20 before costs. This is arithmetic, not a Gold EA result. Also inspect losing sequences and outcome concentration; two records with the same win rate can describe very different experiences.
Can closed trades explain equity drawdown?
Closed-trade P&L describes realised outcomes. Equity also reflects the account while exposure is open. MT5's account report can calculate historical floating results using instrument price history, which is a different input from a list of final trade profits alone.
State whether your journal's drawdown uses balance or equity, the observation interval and its handling of cash movements. A daily equity snapshot may miss an intraday low; a missing interval should remain unknown. Do not label the lowest visible closed-trade point as the account's worst equity drawdown unless the available data establishes that.
How should you use the Gold EA journal preview?
Gold EA's landing page demonstrates a proposed journal and deeper review workflow with illustrative figures. That presentation does not establish a live synchronized journal, editable-note persistence or complete historical equity coverage. Confirm what your actual dashboard supplies before relying on a feature in an operational process.
For now, keep any needed review notes in a private record that you can reconcile with MT5. Each week, choose one question: whether a setting changed, whether costs differed or whether a connection issue aligned with missing records. End with an evidence-backed observation and one next check, rather than judging the setup from the week's profit alone.
